Period homes in Toorak and Kew are not a faster job with a bigger number on the end. Ornate cornices, fretwork, sash windows and cast-iron lace all have to be cut by hand, and a lot of it is under heritage overlay, which constrains the colour scheme as well as the method.

Almost everything here pre-dates 1970, so lead paint is a working assumption rather than a surprise. We prep lead-safe - wet sanding, containment sheeting and proper disposal - instead of dry sanding it across the garden and the neighbours' cars.

We also do a lot of interior work in these homes where the brief is restraint: matching an existing heritage palette, reviving ceiling roses and cornices, and leaving the timber detail crisper than we found it.
